Expressive Self-Portraits

5th grade class at Palo Verde did this project.
We did the contour line drawing first and then used one long sculpture wire to make the face.
It was a great project and was also very challenging.
It challenged the students not to draw a perfect and realistic drawing, but to create 2 expressive drawings in pencil and wire.
Most of them were fearful at first because they were afraid of making mistakes or having "extra" lines on the faces.
They had very different reactions.
Some thought that it was hard and some liked the freedom of making expressive lines.

The artists for references are Egon Schiele, Henri Matisse, and Alexander Calder.
