Art Assignment: Imaginary Friends
This project was inspired and was a response to a show by PBS, called, Art Assignment.
Each episode has an "art assignment," that artist(s) gave you and the viewers could post their creative project based on the assignment.
I found this artist, JooYoung Choi, is very interesting. She was born in 1982 in South Korea and was adopted when she was one year old to Concord, New Hampshire, where Asians were minority. One of her projects, Comic Womb, was about racial and adoption issues, including her personal experiences.
The assignment she gave to the viewers was to create an imaginary friend. Ms. Choi has created many imaginary friends in her drawings or in 3D format like puppets. Her assignment is very playful and fun. Therefore, I made one myself and asked my students to create one as well.
We sketched the idea of this imaginary friend, then included it with self and finished in a painting. There are many possible ways to create this one imaginary friend and we can use different kinds of media to make one.
